- French: This week we worked on the sound “eur”. We also completed a couple journal entries and worked on our French centres. We have been working on speaking French consistently in class and have done several sharing circles to practice speaking French.
- Science: We finished the States of Matter unit. Our next unit is Air and Water. This week we started talking about the water cycle and water sources that natural or man-made.
- Art: This week we created snowflakes and wrote words on them that make us unique.

- French: We have been working on improving our reading this week. We read three different “Chester” books and worked on reading responses for each of them. We also worked on writing a procedural text for how we built our boats.
- Science: We are working on the States of Matter unit. This week we did a few experiments about which solids and liquids can mix together to form solutions and which ones stay separate. We also worked on describing liquids and solids. The students also had a lot of fun building small boats and testing them to see how many pennies they could hold.

- Science: We are working on the States of Matter unit. This week we did an experience about things that float and sink.
- Art: This week for art we made poppies for our class wreath.

- Science: We started the States of Matter unit. We have talked about things that are solid, liquid, and gas. You can ask your child to try and identify different solids, liquids, and gases around the house!

- A sheet was sent home this week with your child’s reading level. It also shows which colour/letter they should be reading in “Je Lis” and “RAZ Kids”. Please let me know if the appropriate colour/letter is not available for your child. As a guideline, the end of year target for grade 1 is around GB+ Level 8 and the end of year target for grade 2 is around GB+ Level 15.

- Sound of the week: OI - words to work on at home: moi, toi, je vois, oiseau, étoile.
- French: We have been continuing to work on journal entries, reading to ourselves and word work. This week we worked on retelling stories by putting events in order after reading.
- Social Studies: We are continuing to work on the Global Communities unit. We are still working on mapping skills and comparing countries and continents around the world. We should be finishing this unit next week. If possible, try to review the 7 continents and 5 oceans with your child. They need to be able to identify them on a map.

- French: We have been continuing to work on journal entries and reading to ourselves.
- Social Studies: We are continuing to work on the Global Communities unit. This week we worked on identifying the 5 oceans. The students now know the Continents Song and Oceans Song (we also sing the words in French at school, ask your child to show you!). We have also been discussing how a country’s proximity to the equator affects its climate and people’s lifestyle. If you are looking for short videos to watch in French at home, we have been watching videos about kids around the world on Là où je dors.
- Art: This week we learnt about different types of lines and started a project with all sorts of different types of lines.

- A yellow folder was sent home today for French homework. French homework consists of reading in French. In the folder, there are instructions for the Chaine de lecture program as well as 3 books around your child’s level. The goal is to try to read for at least 10 minutes in French every day. We will be changing the books every Friday (or last day of the week), so please make sure you send the folder in on those days.
What We’re Working On:
- Sound of the week: AN, AM, EN, EM (all make the same sound). Encourage your child to find words with this sound in their reading.
- French: We have been working on reading by ourselves a lot over the first 2 weeks. We have set up book bags at school where a mix of levelled books and books of interest are kept. We have made it up to 15 minutes of reading by ourselves! This will be one of our centres later in the year. We also did our first journal entry. Students wrote about what they did on the weekend or over the summer.
- Social Studies: We have started working on the Global Communities unit. This week we worked on identifying the 7 continents as well as North, South, East, and West.
- Art: This week we used water colour paint to make an art piece inspired by the book Un bon point pour Zoé.

- French scholastic catalogues were sent home this week. The deadline for the September order and the French Book Order Club is September 20th.
- Meet the Staff Night is on Thursday September 19th. You are invited to come visit your child’s classroom and meet their teachers! The event is from 4-6pm. Students are welcome to come as well. Parent-teacher interviews will be in November.

- Sound of the week: Next week we will start our first sound of the week. We will do activities during the week to learn the sound. Once the reading program starts it can be practiced during at home reading. The first sound is “ON”.
- French: This week we have been getting to know each other and working on French vocabulary. See if your child can tell you some of their favourite things in French!
- Art: We did several art activities this week including a unique fish with pastels.

- A note went home today (Friday) about a French Book Order Club. The regular French Scholastic catalogue should be sent home next week.
- We had a great first assembly today! We will be having another Assembly on Friday September 13th to share information about the Terry Fox Walk.
